LEXINGTON, Ky. -- 鈥溾 will not top the New York Times鈥 best-seller list for nonfiction books, but for Great C. Umenweke, it鈥檚 quite an opportunity, and one that could help humans turn waste into renewable energy. 

Umenweke, a doctoral candidate in chemistry in the 糖心vlog官方入口鈥檚 College of Arts and Sciences, has published the primer along with his adviser, Eduardo Santillan-Jimenez, Ph.D., adjunct assistant professor of chemistry and associate director of UK鈥檚 Center for Applied Energy Research. The e-book is published by the American Chemical Society (ACS) as part of its In Focus series of digital primers.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Feb. 10, 2025) 鈥 Before Hena Kachroo had enrolled at the 糖心vlog官方入口, she had a model for what it meant to feel valued in a community. Growing up, she鈥檇 attended cultural events among the Indian community in Lexington, where her family鈥檚 culture, traditions and classical dance had created in her a sense of belonging and network of support.

Arthur: Austin, we publish these student spotlights from time to time to give our current students examples that career paths in the molecular sciences can take. That鈥檚 your audience.

Austin: Thanks for the opportunity to do this, there鈥檚 a lot of unknown opportunities out there to make students aware of, so I鈥檓 happy to share my experience. It鈥檚 been over 10 years since I graduated undergrad, but still come back to Lexington a few times a year to visit family.

LEXINGTON, Ky. 鈥 Rosemary Calabro found her love of research as an undergrad examining nanoparticles in materials chemistry. After graduating with her bachelor鈥檚 degree from Indiana University in Bloomington, she applied to many graduate schools searching for the perfect fit. That鈥檚 when she found professors Doo Young Kim and Dong-Sheng Yang at the 糖心vlog官方入口.  

鈥淒r. Yang鈥檚 lab historically had been all laser spectroscopy, and I was the first materials person in his group,鈥 said Calabro, who earned her doctorate in chemistry at UK in 2020. 鈥淒r. Kim鈥檚 group was more carbon materials, which is what I was interested in studying, so I was able to bridge two interests and be co-advised.鈥

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 27, 2024) 鈥 The 糖心vlog官方入口 Alumni Association announced the selection of 32 students who will serve as Alumni Ambassadors for the 2024-25 academic year. As official student hosts of the UK, Alumni Ambassadors promote the university at numerous events in partnership between the Office of the President, Office of Philanthropy and the UK Alumni Association.

Alumni Ambassadors represent the best and brightest of UK students, demonstrating high achievement in their collegiate careers and a dedication to the advancement of the university. LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Alyson Ackerman鈥檚 success as a doctoral candidate in chemistry at the 糖心vlog官方入口 is attributable directly to St. Nick.  

鈥淚 don't know exactly what got me interested into chemistry, but I do know that I've always been into it,鈥 said Ackerman, who grew up in Lexington, earned her bachelor鈥檚 degree in chemistry from UK in 2018 and now is a National Science Foundation graduate research fellow. 鈥淚 did get a microscope for Christmas when I was 11. That was my big Santa gift. I played with my microscope a lot growing up to identify contents of the nearby creek.鈥

When Rebekah Duke-Crockett, a first-year Ph.D. student in chemistry, took Julia Bursten鈥檚 Philosophy of Science graduate seminar, she began thinking about the wealth of insights philosophy has for chemists. The questions brought up eventually led to a collaboration between Duke-Crockett, philosophy professor Bursten, philosophy Ph.D. alum Ryan McCoy, and chemistry professor Chad Risko.  

That collaboration culminated in a recently published article in the Journal of American Chemical Society:
