Of the 14 million cancer survivors in the United States, a significant number experience a serious side effect called chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment (CICI). While easily recognized, little is known about the etiology of this condition, also known informally as “chemo brain.” CICI can significantly reduce patients’ quality of life with serious, even devastating, symptoms such as memory lapses, difficulty concentrating, negative impacts on multitasking, confusion and fatigue.

The beginning of the new year marks a celebration of mentoring at the National Science Foundation through the recognition of mentors via PAESMEM: the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, & Engineering Mentoring.  A recent article published by the National Science Foundation featured PAESMEM alumni, including ����vlog�ٷ���� Professor D. Allan Butterfield, on the subject of what makes a good mentor and why mentoring matters.

The Society for Free Radical Biology & Medicine recently named the ����vlog�ٷ����'s Dr. Allan Butterfield as the recipient of its 2013 Discovery Award.

A groundbreaking new study led by the ����vlog�ٷ���� Markey Cancer Center's Dr. Peter Zhou found that triple-negative breast cancer cells are missing a key enzyme that other cancer cells contain — providing insight into potential therapeutic targets to treat the aggressive cancer.

On November 17, 2012, UK’s Allan Butterfield was announced as the newest Fellow of the Society for Free Radical Biology and Medicine (SFRBM). Butterfield’s election was announced at the 19th Annual Meeting of SFRBM in San Diego.
